If you want to get off the beaten track and into some secluded, untouched wilderness, Southern Laos is an outdoor adventurers paradise. Would you like to trek through jungle covered mountains, explore vast cave systems, or ride your mountain bike across red dirt roads to centuries-old ruins in lost forests? It’s all up to you and your adventurous spirit. Want more? Have you ever wanted to swing through the tree tops on a 400m zip line; spend the night in a jungle tree house; or kayak down the whitewater rapids of the mighty Mekong River? You can do that too.
Don’t worry if you prefer a slightly less frenetic pace; there’s activities for the relaxed adventurer, and for families too. Think hiking along waterfalls and through coffee plantations, swimming in natural rock pools and kayaking through the 4,000 Islands to try to spy the rare Irrawaddy dolphins around the Lao-Cambodian border, as far South in Laos as you can go.
There are now a number of specialised travel companies and local community groups offering organised adventure tours in previously remote reaches. That means it’s now easier than ever to experience the wild side of Laos.
