The Mekong

The Mighty Mekong lives up to its name – at 4,350km long; it surges down from the Himalayan Plateau through China, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam and the South China Sea, making it the longest river in South East Asia. By the time the Mekong reaches Southern Laos, it has, like an old man, slowed considerably, its more sedate pace reflected in the gentle, unhurried life of the Southern Laotians.

The Mekong Delta is the home and lifeblood of over 100 million people and in Southern Laos; you can see why. Paddle silently in a kayak or putter along in a wooden fishing boat and witness traditional farming with buffalos, fishing with hand woven nets and bamboo traps, and fruit and vegetable cultivation along the fertile riverbanks. Experience untouched and authentic ways of life that have existed here, unchanged, for centuries.

Step off the beaten track on the mystical waterways of Southern Laos and experience a timeless place. Explore the maze of islands in Si Phan Don. Try to count them if you dare! Look out for the rare and endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. Stop off on one of the islands, such as Don Deang in Champasak, and stroll along its empty sandy beaches. In the afternoon, embark on a trip of the gods with a sunset cruise through this magical oasis and you may begin to appreciate the true beauty of the Mekong in Southern Laos.
