Local Arts

Meet the Local Artists & Artisans

The local artisans of Southern Laos house a diverse collection of unique traditional objets d’art. Step inside another world of ethnic diversity and age-old skills and customs, passed down through the generations for centuries.

See theatre as you have never before with Laos’s age-old shadow puppetry in accompaniment with live music and silent, black-and-white film at the Shadow Puppet Theatre and Chang Tuk Tuk Cinema in Champasak.

Feel inspired by the incredible stone carvings in the ancient temples of Southern Laos then, take a trip to the village of Don Khor to see stone carvers continue this same art today. Further on at Ban Nong Beun, discover the fine wooden carvings of the Ta Oy people who specialise in sculptures, statues and ceremonial masks.

Delve into ethnic textiles and truly uncover Lao culture. Visit ethnic weaving villages and watch these skilled women in Ban Saphai, Ban Houay Houn, and on the Toumlan weaving trail, weave homespun silk and cottons and natural dyes on hand-carved wooden looms, just as their mothers and grandmothers before them did.

Return to the present day and the celebration of modern art at the Lao Wind Trace Art Museum near Pakse. Here, you can witness the talent of young Lao artists and their interpretations of traditional rural life.
