Diverse Ways of Life and Food

The unique and isolated Southern Laos has four provinces: Salavan to the north, Attapeu to the south, Sekong to the southeast, and Champasak to the west. The local ways of life in these provinces are born of the fertile and rugged landscape of Laos, the history and ethnicities of its bordering countries, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Whilst the Khmer were the first people to leave their mark on the country, more than 14 other ethnic groups including the Talieng, Katu, Alak, Nge contribute greatly to the rich tapestry of lifestyles in Southern Laos today.

To really experience Southern Laos, you must visit some of these ethnic villages and see their customs, beliefs and ways of life firsthand. Support their subsistence lives and buy their unique and handmade handicrafts, and carry a piece of Southern Laos home with you.

In the Mekong Delta, you will witness traditional farming with buffalos, fishing with hand woven nets and bamboo traps, and fruit and vegetable cultivation along the fertile riverbanks. Experience untouched and authentic ways of life that have existed here, unchanged, for centuries.

You won’t feel hungry for long in Southern Laos either, which, thanks to its fertile soils, cool microclimates, and the flooding Mekong River, produces a smorgasbord of fruits, vegetables, herbs, grains, meats and fish. Try laap, dried seaweed, pork, chicken and vegetables steamed in papaya leaves, hot bowls of pho (noodle soup) and the ubiquitous sticky rice. And of course, never-ending cups of freshly-ground and brewed local coffee and tea.
